Even as Poker has grown in popularity over the centuries, it has spawned over hundreds of mutant forms in the course of its evolution.
Broadly speaking, the Poker variations can be classified into five categories. These include:
Draw Poker Variants: In these games, players receive all their cards at the start of the game, and exchange them during the course of play. Examples include Anaconda, Don Juan, Psycho.
Stud Poker Variants: In these games, players either receive all their cards at the first deal and acquire some of them as the game progresses, or receive all their cards at the start of play and reveal them one by one. Examples include Stud Poker, English Stud, and Six Kick.
Shared-Card Poker Variants: In these games, cards that are dealt on the table are used by the players to make their final hands. Examples include Omaha, Texas Hold 'Em, and Tic Tac Toe.
Miscellaneous Poker Variants: These games do not belong to the previously three mentioned groups, but they do fall under the broad category of Poker. Examples include Guts, Buddha's Folly, and Indian Poker.
Non-Poker Variants: These games have some the characteristics of Poker, but they do not use the standard Poker ranking to determine winners. Examples include Seven Twenty Seven, Boo Ray, and Numbers.
